Bro. Smith Wigglesworth of Bowland Street Mission reports:

The Lord is mightily blessing us. The results are that sinners are being saved and saints being filled with the fullness of the Holy Ghost with the signs.

We are realizing the blessing that comes to us through pleading the blood. There is certain victory if the pleader keeps the precious Jesus before him. Then the Holy Ghost commences to plead through him. This is the commencement of signs.

Report from Yorkshire. (4/08)

p. 7

This is the earliest published item from Wigglesworth I found so far. Confidence was a magazine published by All Saints Church in Sunderland, where Wigglesworth received the baptism of the Holy Spirit in 1907.

Confidence also reported on page 7 of the April 1908 issue, “The Rev. C.F. Atherton holds waiting meetings at his manse. The Lord graciously baptized him at Bradford in Mr. Smith Wigglesworth's house about a month ago.” KWL

by Smith Wigglesworth
Confidence, April 1908.

Bowland Street Mission, Bradford, has had many days of God’s right hand, and has won many trophies of the cross, and seen much of the working of the mighty hands of God; but none of the past days resemble those of the present. Thank God, we are in the midst of that which might be called the soul’s awakening. Those that were lifeless and helpless (having to be carried), are now full of life and prepared to carry others from the cold, indifferent, formal life, to be red-hot, Spirit-filled saints, speaking and singing in tongues.

Great grace upon the church. (8/23)

The Latter Rain Evangel, August 1923.
Preached in Chicago, 31 October 1922.
[Sermon incorrectly dated 1923.]

“And great grace was upon them all.” Great grace is upon us when we magnify the Lord. If ever you want to see what God means when he gets a chance at his people, have a peep at the fourth chapter of Acts, and see what God did. Just because all the people shouted aloud to him, he imparted to them such blessing that every person was filled with the Holy Ghost, and I believe what God wants to do in these days is to give an inward manifestation of his divine presence within the body until the body is moved by the power of the Spirit. Beloved, we are accustomed to earthly things, but when God sends the heavenly it is beyond our understanding. Oh, to have the revelation of the mind of God! It fills my soul, the thought of it! Oh, for the kind of loosening of the body that we will never be bound again! Just filled with God!

Deliverance to the captives. (2/23)

by Smith Wigglesworth
The Pentecostal Evangel, 17 February 1923.
Confidence, October-December 1923.
Preached at the Springfield Assembly, Springfield, Missouri. Ever Increasing Faith, chapter 2.

Read Luke 4.1-20.

Our precious Lord Jesus has everything for everybody. Forgiveness of sin, healing of diseases, and the fullness of the Spirit all come from one source—from the Lord Jesus Christ. Hear him who is the same yesterday, today and forever, as he announces the purpose for which he came: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.”

Jesus had been baptized by John in Jordan, and the Holy Spirit had descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him. Being full of the Holy Ghost, he had been led by the Spirit into the wilderness, there to come off more than conqueror over the archenemy. Then he returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee and preached in the synagogues, and at last he came to his old hometown—Nazareth, where he announced his mission in the words I have just quoted. For a brief while he ministered on the earth, and then gave his life a ransom for all. But God raised him from the dead. And before he went to the glory he told his disciples that they too should receive the power of the Holy Ghost upon them. Thus, through them, his gracious ministry would continue. This power of the Holy Ghost was not only for a few apostles, but even for them that are afar off, even as many as our God should call, even for us in this 20th century. Some ask, “But was not this power just for the privileged few in the first century?” No. Read the Master’s great commission as recorded by Mark, and you will see it is for them that believe.

I started this site ’cause I took a Pentecostal history class in grad school, used several Wigglesworth articles for a paper, and rather than just throw away my source materials, I stuck ’em on the internet. I’ve been adding to them since. Thanks for the encouraging feedback!

Yes, the Wigglesworth articles are edited for spelling, punctuation, paragraph breaks, and verse references. But that’s all. Most of the source materials are transcripts of what he spoke aloud, so I believe such alterations are justifiable. I’ve included scans of the original publications in case you wish to compare. Any further typos are because the OCR software made them and I didn’t catch them. Sorry.

If you come across another version of these articles with significant differences (including in print!) it’s because their editor decided to take further liberties with Wigglesworth than I would. There comes a point when such editing becomes less about Wigglesworth’s own words, and more about editors wishing to reshape Wigglesworth to suit them. Or the times. There are certain things Wigglesworth said and taught where I personally can’t agree, and honestly don’t believe the scriptures back him up. (You want my view, visit Christ Almighty.) But as an historian I’m posting what he said, disagreements or not. I wouldn’t appreciate it if people bent my words in like manner, and I’m not editing him for anyone’s theological sensibilities—neither mine nor yours.

You have my permission to link to this blog, and make fair-use quotations of it. But as for republication, the rights don’t belong to me. Thanks to Disney’s continued lobbying for copyright extensions, they won’t be out of copyright in the United States till 2042—if ever. So the copyrights belong to Wigglesworth, the respective publications, and their successors. All rights reserved.

Bible links go to good old Bible Gateway. Wigglesworth used the Authorized (King James) Version, and any discrepancies are because he impressively quoted from memory.
